Pegasus R6Review: Promise Pegasus R6 Thunderbolt-Equipped Data Storage Device

Promise's Pegasus R6 is the first desktop storage system that utilises Thunderbolt technology. This means that the device offers unrivalled read and write speeds when it comes to external Mac data storage. Sadly, this does also mean it's only compatible with other devices that use Thunderbolt technology.

Thunderbolt isn't the only reason the R6 performs so well however; the device sports an impressive array of features.

Vast Storage - and room for even more

The R6 takes its name in part from the fact that it has 6 bays, each bay holding a 1TB 7200RPM hard drive, giving the user an impressive 6TB in total. For those who will not need quite so much storage, the cheaper Pegasus R4 has - you guessed it - 4 bays and 4TB of disk space.

The hard drive bays are well designed to be easily accessible, allowing drives to be temporarily removed for use in other devices or replaced with other drives with little fuss. The bays are compatible with the standard 3.5 inch SATA drives, the 2.5 inch Notebook and new Solid State drives.

Unparalleled Read Write Speeds

The R6 is equipped with OS X compatible software allowing users to monitor the status of all drives, manipulate their data, and set up their desired RAID configuation.

It can achieve truly amazing data transfer speeds of 800 MBps when communicating with fully compatible devices!

Conclusion

The Pegasus R6 is everything we would want in a storage system and more. It offers bags of space, simply remarkable data transfer speeds, and a user-friendly design that allows for upgrades and gives you real flexibilty as to what drives you choose to have in it at any given point.

In fact the only negative attribute would be the price. At around £1250 it may be too steep for some, but then there is the R4 (around £760) to consider. Those who do opt for the R6 can be confident they will most certainly get what they pay for.
