Apple's AirPort Express Explained
What it is: a wireless portable router.
At time of writing (Summer 2010) there are two versions available: the original supports the 802.11b and 802.11g wireless specifications; the latest also supports 802.11a and the newer 802.11n specification (also called 'Draft N'), and is dual band, able to operate at both 2.4GHz and 5GHz data transfer frequencies.
Fast Wireless Data Transfer
Speed tests report that the latest Express is up to twice as fast as its predecessor at distances up to 15 metres, and at 10 metres transferred data at 22.6 Mb per second using 2.4GHz, and at 25.4Mb per second using 5GHz. If you have a broadband connection at 8Mb per second or more and regularly transfer large files then the overhead will be welcome.
Audio Streaming for iTunes
Given that the Apple TV is the only other device that can stream protected audio content from Macintosh software such as iTunes, the AirPort Express is extremely well-used for audio streaming. The stereo mini-jack port for analog audio out also doubles as an optical digital connector, meaning that it can be connected to stereo or other equipment with high quality digital/analog converters to stream high quality 'lossless' audio. If you want to use other audio streaming programs apart from iTunes, compatibility software called 'AirFoil' is available that will allow you to do this.
The Airport Express can either be plugged into a power socket direct, or the plug can be detached to allow use of an extension lead.
A remote is not included, but the free iTunes Remote app for the iPhone and iPod Touch allows you to use either as a remote.
A WAN Ethernet port allows a cable or ADSL modem to be connected, whilst a USB port means a shared printer can also be connected.
Up to ten machines can be part of the network.
Easy Setup
Setting up and configuring Airport Express is simple because, instead of a using a web interface to configure the router, you just install the bundled software on your Mac and a setup wizard will guide you through the process. There's also has a step by step troubleshooting wizard if you run into problems.
